Istituto Galilei (Galilei Institute) is a school of Italian language and culture in central Florence, at Via degli Alfani 68, about five minutes on foot from the Duomo and 15 minutes from Santa Maria Novella station. It has taught Italian in Florence since 1985 and states that it is recognised by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research.
The school specialises in one-to-one courses and small groups of no more than four students, taught by native-speaker teachers in 60-minute lessons. Programmes are tailored to each student's level and goals, run all year and can also be scheduled at weekends and on public holidays. Course types include:
- Intensive one-to-one courses of 4 to 8 hours per day, starting on any day
- Small-group courses of 4, 6 or 8 hours per day
- Weekend crash courses
- Italian for business, with specialist vocabulary for economics, finance, marketing and law
- CILS and PLIDA exam preparation
- Online Italian courses
Culture courses cover Italian cooking, art history, photography, studio art, Italian literature, guided visits and the history of Florence. Art history lessons can be taught in English or Italian, and individual courses also in Spanish or French. Some one-to-one courses are recognised as Bildungsurlaub (educational leave). Students who need a visa receive a certificate of enrolment once the full course fee has been paid.
