Howard University is a private research university in Washington, D.C., founded in 1867. It has 14 schools and colleges and more than 14,400 undergraduate and graduate students, and states that it offers 140 programmes of study leading to undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. The university has a long commitment to the education of underrepresented populations in the United States and worldwide.
Undergraduates choose from over 50 areas of study in seven schools and colleges:

- College of Fine Arts (art, music, theatre arts)
- College of Engineering and Architecture
- College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences
- School of Business
- Cathy Hughes School of Communications
- School of Education
Professional schools include the College of Medicine, the College of Dentistry and the School of Law, and joint BS/MD, BS/DDS and BA/JD degrees are offered.
International first-year students apply through the Common App for fall entry (spring entry is no longer offered). Non-native English speakers need TOEFL iBT 90 or IELTS 6.5; SAT and ACT scores are not required in the 2026-27 cycle. Applicants from systems not listed by Howard need an academic evaluation by a NACES member.

International first-year applicants apply through the Common App for fall entry (Fall 2027 applications are open) under Early Decision (binding), Early Action or Regular Decision. Howard advises starting the process at least a year before entry. Requirements:
- $45 non-refundable application fee
- Academic records for grades 9 to 12 (or 13) and national exam certificates such as GCSE, IGCSE or IB, with official English translations
- An academic evaluation by a NACES member for students from systems not listed by Howard
- TOEFL or IELTS for non-native English speakers
- Two letters of recommendation (counsellor and teacher)
SAT/ACT scores are optional in the 2026-27 cycle, except for joint degree programmes.
Applicants whose native language is not English need TOEFL iBT 90 or IELTS 6.5 overall; only these two tests are accepted, with official reports. The requirement is waived for students from countries where English is an official language or who have studied in the United States for at least four years, and may be waived if secondary school was taught in English (with a letter from the school).
