Kent State University is a public research university founded in 1910, with its main campus in Kent, in Northeast Ohio (United States). It holds the Carnegie R1 designation for the highest level of research activity. The Kent Campus is the residential centre of an eight-campus system that enrols more than 33,000 students, and the university has over 150 professionally accredited programmes.

Kent State offers associate, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, including a College of Podiatric Medicine. About 1,797 international students from 100 countries are enrolled. Students can choose from more than 200 education abroad programmes in over 60 countries, including courses at the university's own location in Florence, Italy.

International first-year applicants need a minimum GPA of 2.5 and an English score such as TOEFL iBT 71 or IELTS 6.0. Applicants who meet the academic requirements but not the English score can be admitted conditionally and first take classes at the ESL Center, which also offers English courses on their own. On the Kent Campus, 24 residence halls house more than 5,500 students.

Kent State offers associate and bachelor's degrees (e.g. B.B.A., B.S.) and minors across its colleges, with more than 150 professionally accredited programmes. Applicants who do not yet meet a selective major's requirements may be considered for a pre-major, and international students can apply to the Honors College. Over 200 education abroad programmes run in more than 60 countries.

Graduate study covers master's degrees (e.g. M.S.A. in accounting, M.F.A. in acting), doctoral degrees, education specialist degrees and the doctor of podiatric medicine. Admission requirements, deadlines and English requirements are set by each programme; some require the GRE or GMAT, and graduate assistantships can be applied for with the application.

Admission Requirements

International first-year applicants must finish secondary school in their home country before enrolling and should have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on the U.S. 4.0 scale; SAT/ACT scores are not required. Application steps:

Minimum English scores for undergraduate applicants:

  • ELS Level 112, SAT reading and writing 510 or ACT English 21

Applicants below these scores who meet the academic requirements can be admitted conditionally and first study at the ESL Center. Graduate programmes set their own English requirements. Waivers depend on educational background.

Fees

Estimated annual costs for international undergraduates on the Kent Campus, 2026-27 academic year:

International students must buy the university health insurance plan (waivers possible) and pay a US$20 International Student Activity Fee each semester. Programme fees are extra.

Housing

The Kent Campus has 24 residence halls housing more than 5,500 students in first-year and living-learning communities, with professional hall directors and 24/7 safety staff. The 2026-27 cost estimate of US$14,360 for food and housing is based on a standard double room and the Blue meal plan; other room types and meal plans are available. Students under 18 need parent or guardian approval before applying for housing.
