Lenoir-Rhyne University (LR) is a university rooted in the Lutheran tradition, founded in 1891 by four Lutheran pastors. Its main campus is in Hickory, North Carolina, about an hour from Charlotte and Asheville, and it also has locations in Asheville and in Columbia, South Carolina. LR is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. It has more than 2,230 students (1,477 undergraduates in Hickory and 753 graduate students) from 29 countries.

The university offers more than 45 majors, 53 minors and 20 graduate programmes, in fields such as nursing, the sciences, education, business and the liberal arts. The student-to-faculty ratio is 14:1 and the average class size is 22. Through the accelerated master's programme, LR undergraduates can take up to 12 graduate credits that count towards both degrees.

International applicants are advised by a Director of International Admission, and LR also accepts incoming exchange students. First-year students apply through the Common App or the LR application, with rolling admission and no ACT/SAT requirement. Undergraduates in their first three years must live in campus housing unless exempt.

Financial Aid

According to the university, all undergraduates receive scholarships or financial assistance, with more than $30 million awarded each year through merit, talent, need-based and other scholarships. More than $200,000 a year is available in study abroad scholarships for LR students. The Tuition-Free Guarantee introduced in fall 2026 applies only to eligible students from North and South Carolina.

Housing

All degree-seeking undergraduates in their first three years must live in campus housing unless they qualify for an exemption (for example being a senior, 22 or older, married, a veteran, or living with parents within 25 miles). Incoming students complete a housing application, where they can request a roommate, and receive confirmation in early July. The residence hall contract covers the whole academic year.
