The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) is a polytechnic in Edmonton, Alberta, with a main campus in the city centre connected by public transport. It has 18,200 students in credit programmes, including 3,900 international students from 80 countries, and offers 140 credit programmes leading to degrees, applied degrees, diplomas and certificates. It is also a major apprenticeship trainer, with 29 registered trades programmes.

Its degrees in business and applied science and technology are accredited by Alberta Advanced Education, and diplomas and certificates take one or two years. NAIT is a designated learning institution with programmes eligible for the study permit and the post-graduation work permit, and licensed immigration advisers work on campus. The usual English requirement is IELTS 6.0 with no section below 6.0, and English as a Second Language courses are available. International students have orientation, a peer group and an intercultural community centre, and NAIT offers study abroad and exchange options. According to NAIT, 92% of full-time graduates are employed within nine months.

Admission Requirements

  • Check that the programme is open to international applicants and review its entrance requirements; NAIT assesses foreign transcripts for equivalence with the required Alberta high school courses
  • International applications open on 1 August (fall intake), 1 January (winter) and 1 April (spring/summer)
  • Apply online with NAIT's International Application for Admission; an Alberta Student Number and a card for the non-refundable application fee are needed
  • Some programmes are competitive or include an interview
  • After paying the tuition deposit, NAIT requests the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) for the study permit

Language Requirements

Applicants from countries not on NAIT's exempt list must show English Language Proficiency before an offer can be made. The average requirement is IELTS 6.0 with no section below 6.0, though some programmes differ. Proficiency can also be shown through consecutive full-time studies in English or specific English courses, including NAIT's ESL programme.
