North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is a public university in Durham, North Carolina, part of the University of North Carolina (UNC) System. It was founded as the first public liberal arts institution for African American students in the United States and has served its community for more than a century. NCCU has 9,281 students (7,325 undergraduates and 1,956 graduate and professional students) and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The university offers 105 degrees (54 bachelor's, 28 master's, 3 doctoral and 20 certificates) through these colleges and schools:

Popular undergraduate programmes include business administration, pre-nursing, psychology, criminal justice and information technology. The School of Graduate Studies offers more than 30 graduate programmes, including a PhD in Integrated Biosciences and an EdD in Counseling, Counselor Education and Supervision. The most popular graduate programmes are law (JD, at the School of Law), library science, business administration (MBA), social work and psychology.

Admission Requirements

Anyone educated outside the United States applies as an international applicant. Requirements include a complete application with a $50 non-refundable fee, secondary school transcripts (evaluation through SpanTran at a discounted rate is available), a police clearance certificate in English or with a notarised English translation, and a Financial Statement Certificate of Eligibility with bank evidence covering tuition, fees and living costs (for the first year if sponsored, for all years if self-funded). Transfer applicants submit official transcripts from all colleges attended.

Language Requirements

International applicants must show English proficiency with at least one of:

  • TOEFL iBT 4 (61 on the old scale) or paper-based 500; TOEFL Essentials not accepted
  • IELTS 6
  • PTE Academic 44
  • Duolingo English Test 105
  • Cambridge English C1
  • SAT reading score of 25 (redesigned SAT)

The requirement is waived if the applicant's country has English as its official language or the secondary school taught mainly in English.
