North Carolina State University (NC State) is a university of the University of North Carolina (UNC) System in Raleigh, North Carolina (United States), part of the Research Triangle region. It has more than 39,000 undergraduate and graduate students, with a student body from more than 110 countries.
NC State offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and over 300 degree programmes in total. It is known for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, but 44% of new students choose non-STEM programmes. Studio-based majors include Architecture, Fashion and Textile Design and Industrial Design, and a two-year Agricultural Institute has its own admissions process.
International students apply as first-year or transfer applicants, and decisions for applicants outside the US are made on a rolling basis. Academically competitive applicants without the required English score can be admitted conditionally through the Intensive English Program (IEP). The Office of International Services supports international students. They are not eligible for financial aid, but a limited number of merit-based scholarships is available.

Admission
Applicants who are not US citizens or permanent residents apply as international first-year or transfer students and pay a non-refundable US$100 application fee (no fee waivers for F or J visa students). Requirements include:
- Official transcripts from all schools, with English translations; university studies outside the US need a WES or ECE course-by-course evaluation
- Official English proficiency scores (SAT/ACT not required for students at schools outside the US)
- Certificate of Financial Responsibility and a recent bank statement: US$58,423 for the 2027-28 academic year
International applicants follow the regular Early Action, Regular Decision and transfer deadlines; decisions for applicants outside the US are rolling.
Language requirements
Official TOEFL, IELTS (not IELTS Online), Duolingo or PTE scores must be sent electronically by the testing agency. For TOEFL iBT tests taken before 21 January 2026, full admission requires 80 (at least 18 in each section) and conditional admission 42. An ACT reading subscore of 27 or SAT reading subscore of 33 can replace the English test. Conditionally admitted students complete NC State's Intensive English Program (four levels) before starting their degree.
Scholarships and financial aid
International applicants are not eligible for financial aid. A limited number of competitive merit-based scholarships are available to international students; admitted students apply through the PACK ASSIST scholarship portal.
