Ohio University (OHIO) is a four-year public university based in Athens, Ohio (United States), with five regional commuter campuses across the state and extension campuses in Dublin and Cleveland for graduate and professional programmes. It has more than 29,000 students across all campuses and online, and holds the R1 classification ('very high research activity') in the Carnegie Classification.
Its nine undergraduate colleges offer more than 250 programmes; most bachelor's degrees take four years, and there are also some two-year associate degrees. The university also offers master's and doctoral programmes, the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and fully online degrees through OHIO Online. Students can take part in study abroad programmes.
OHIO has more than 100 years of experience with international students. International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) helps with immigration matters and liaises with sponsoring agencies and foreign governments. International undergraduates apply through the Common App or the university's own online application; applicants who do not yet meet the English requirement can be admitted to the Ohio Program of Intensive English (OPIE). On the Athens campus, residence halls are grouped into areas called Greens.

Admission is selective: international first-year applicants should have completed secondary education in their country with above-average grades (as a guide, at least six IGCSE/O-level passes at grade C or higher, or an average of 5 out of 7 in IB college-preparatory subjects).
- Application through the Common App or OHIO's alternative online application
- International application fee of US$75
- Academic records from every secondary school attended, with certified English translations
- Transfer students: course-by-course evaluation by a NACES member agency

Fall applicants who meet the early action date get priority for direct entry, merit scholarships and honors programmes; there are also rolling dates for fall and spring.
Undergraduates seeking direct admission must show English proficiency with a test taken within the last year:

Estimated annual costs for international students on the Athens campus, 2026-27 academic year (two semesters):
- Tuition and fees: US$26,792
- Lodging (classic double room): US$8,954
- Meals (Traditional 14 plan): US$5,582

Merit scholarships are available to international first-year and transfer students in any programme who earn direct admission to academic study (not to the intensive English programme or the University Success Pathway). Awards are only for students starting in the fall semester; the application for admission also serves as the scholarship application, and first-year awards are based mainly on cumulative grade point average. On-campus jobs may be possible but cover only a small part of living costs.
On the Athens campus, residence halls are grouped into three areas: East Green, South Green and West Green. A standard double room is among the most affordable options, and the Traditional 14 meal plan is the lowest-priced plan for first-year students living on campus; second-year students have more meal plan options. In 2026-27, a classic double room is estimated at US$8,954 per year for international students.
