Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático (RESAD)

The Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático (RESAD) is a public centre of higher education in dramatic arts in Madrid. Its origins go back to 1831, when the Real Conservatorio de Música y Declamación, promoted by Queen María Cristina de Borbón, was extended with a national school of declamation.

Students who complete their studies at RESAD obtain the Título de Grado en Enseñanzas Artísticas Superiores de Arte Dramático, which by law is equivalent to a university bachelor's degree. The programme is divided into three specialisations with a total of six pathways:

• Acting (Interpretación)
• Stage Direction and Playwriting (Dirección Escénica y Dramaturgia)
• Stage Design (Escenografía)

Since 1998 the school has had its own building of more than 10,000 square metres. It includes the Valle-Inclán theatre with 500 seats, the multipurpose García Lorca hall for 40 to 52 spectators, a theatre and performing-arts library of about 55,000 volumes, rehearsal rooms of up to 300 square metres, classrooms for dance, voice, drawing and make-up, construction workshops and a costume and props store.
