Reed College is a private (independent) liberal arts and sciences college in Southeast Portland, Oregon, in the north-western United States. Founded in 1908, it has 1,524 undergraduate students and a student-to-faculty ratio of 9:1. Teaching is conference-style, and students receive written feedback, with less emphasis on letter grades.
Students earn a bachelor of arts in one of 26 academic departments, choosing from 38 majors (13 of them interdisciplinary) or designing their own with college approval. The curriculum includes the yearlong Humanities 110 course, broad distribution requirements and a senior thesis. Reed also offers a master of arts in liberal studies and runs the only nuclear research reactor at a U.S. liberal arts college, which students help operate.
Reed charges no application fee and has a test-free admission policy. It meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for all admitted students, international or domestic, and from the fall 2026 entering class intends to award full-tuition scholarships to two students from each continent. International students attend a required International Student Orientation, and all first-year and second-year students live on campus.

Reed awards the bachelor of arts in 26 academic departments, with 38 majors, 13 of them interdisciplinary (for example computer science, sociology and dance-theatre); students can also design their own major with college approval. All students take the yearlong Humanities 110 course and distribution requirements and write a senior thesis based on original research. Undergraduates take part in research, including in the college's nuclear reactor.
Reed offers one graduate programme: a master of arts in liberal studies, with a flexible, interdisciplinary course of study.
International applicants apply through the Common Application or the Coalition Application (Scoir); there is no application fee and no test requirement. Required:
- School report and counsellor recommendation
- Two teacher recommendations from different disciplines (with translation if not in English)
- Full official secondary school transcripts translated into English, plus exam results (e.g. IB or British system)
- CSS Profile, if applying for financial aid
Optional interviews are available through InitialView or Vericant. For the visa, admitted students submit an International Student Certification of Finances.
English test results are encouraged but not required for applicants whose native language is not English, and no test is needed after an English-medium school. There is no minimum score; average scores seen by Reed are TOEFL 5.0+ (110+ on the previous scale), IELTS 7+, Duolingo 145+, SAT evidence-based reading/writing 600+ and ACT reading and English 28+.
All aid is need-based: Reed offers no academic or athletic scholarships, but meets 100% of demonstrated need for all admitted students, international or domestic, for four years, with grants, a loan and a campus job. International applicants must file the CSS Profile when applying; those admitted without aid cannot receive aid later. From the fall 2026 entering class, Reed intends to offer full-tuition Continental Scholarships to two students from each continent, and admitted UWC students receive US$30,000 a year.
All first-year and second-year students live on campus. First-year students live in designated neighbourhoods with other first-years, and Reed also offers interest-based housing. Transfer students can live in upper-division neighbourhoods or off campus, with resources for off-campus students. Campus dining offers made-from-scratch meals with vegan and vegetarian options, meal plans and mobile ordering.
