Western Oregon University (WOU) is a public, mid-sized university in Monmouth, Oregon, in the Willamette Valley, about 20 minutes from Salem and 75 minutes from Portland; it also has a presence in Salem. Founded in 1856, it presents itself as Oregon's first public university and is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). It is also Oregon's only public four-year Hispanic-Serving Institution.

WOU has 3,951 students, a 14:1 student-to-faculty ratio and an average class size of 19. It offers 60 majors; the most popular are education, psychology, business, criminal justice and exercise science. Less common options include aquarium science, American Sign Language studies, cybercrime investigation and data analytics, and there are graduate programmes and certificates, for example in education and leadership.

International students make up about 1% of undergraduates. Applications for undergraduate, graduate and international students are handled through separate routes, and WOU uses rolling admission, so students can apply throughout the year.
