Saint Mary’s College of California (SMC) is an independent Catholic college in Moraga, in the hills of the San Francisco Bay Area, 23 miles east of San Francisco. It is run in the Lasallian tradition of the Christian Brothers and receives no operating support from public funds. The college has about 2,000 undergraduate students and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1.

Undergraduate and graduate programmes are offered through three schools:

  • School of Arts and Sciences
  • School of Economics and Business Administration
  • Kalmanovitz School of Education, with graduate programmes for teachers, counsellors and leaders

There are 40 undergraduate majors, from Biology and Engineering to Dance, Business Administration and East Asian Studies, and graduate programmes are offered in person and online. Students can join study programmes in Europe, Asia and Latin America, and full-time undergraduates pay no extra tuition for the January term.

First-year, transfer and international students apply through the admissions office; transfer students can apply at any time, with no minimum number of credits. The campus has 21 residence halls, from first-year halls and suites to housing for graduate students. For the 2026-27 academic year, the average financial aid package for students with demonstrated need is $49,283.

Fees

Undergraduate tuition for the 2026-27 academic year (US$):

  • Full-time (12-18 units per semester): $30,708 per semester, $61,416 per year
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN): $25,590 per term (summer, fall and spring), $76,770 per year
  • Part-time: $2,200 per unit
  • Annual fees: $216 student body fee, $320 student enhancement fee and $100 student experience fee

The estimated total cost of attendance for a full-time student living on campus is $87,612, including $18,900 for food and housing. Health insurance ($2,406 a year) is mandatory for international students. Graduate tuition varies by programme.

Housing

Saint Mary’s has 21 residence halls on campus: first-year residence halls, suite-style halls for sophomores and above, upperclass townhouses and options for graduate students. Rooms range from traditional doubles and singles to suites and townhouses, most with a meal plan. For the 2026-27 academic year, annual food and housing costs range from $14,500 (townhouse double) to $21,300 (renovated suite single), and the college budgets $18,900 for food and housing on campus. The housing application is completed online through the housing portal, and the Campus Housing office also offers resources for living off campus.
