Sciences Po Aix is an institute of political studies (Institut d'études politiques) in Aix-en-Provence, in Provence in the south of France. It describes itself as a grande école that trains managers for the public and private sectors. It grew out of a centre for political and administrative studies created in the early 1950s and became an institute of political studies by decree in 1956.

Its main programme is the five-year Sciences Po Aix diploma, based on the humanities and social sciences, with a Franco-German track run with the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. It also offers:

  • Licence (bachelor's level), master's and mastère programmes
  • Preparation for French civil-service entrance exams (CPAG)
  • Continuing education certificates

International exchange students and independent students (free movers) can choose between a one-year university certificate (CEP, 60 ECTS credits, French at B2 level), a flexible one-year programme (PEPA) and a one-semester programme (PEPS), combining lectures and small-group seminars from a course catalogue for international students; a B1 level of French is required for the courses designed for them. Exchange students must be nominated by their home university and pay no tuition fees at Sciences Po Aix; free movers apply directly and pay registration fees.

More information about Academic Programs

  • Sciences Po Aix diploma: five-year programme in the humanities and social sciences, entered after the baccalauréat
  • Franco-German track with the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg: five years alternating between the two institutions, leading to Freiburg bachelor's and master's degrees plus the Sciences Po Aix diploma and a national master's degree
  • Licence d'administration publique (public administration)
  • CPAG: preparation for civil-service entrance exams

For international exchange students and free movers: the CEP one-year university certificate (60 ECTS credits), the PEPA (one year) and the PEPS (one semester); PEPA and PEPS lead to a transcript of grades and credits rather than a certificate.

More information about Graduate Programs

Sciences Po Aix runs national master's degrees (Master 2 level), some of them also on a work-study basis, ending with a field study or an internship depending on whether they are research or professional programmes. Fields include:

  • Public careers
  • International expertise, international affairs and international business
  • Geostrategy, defence and international security
  • Journalism and international issues; consulting, influence communication and public relations
  • Cultural policy and sponsorship
  • European policy and transnational cooperation

It also offers a mastère in intelligence studies (renseignement) and the CORIS master's.

Admission Requirements

Requirements for international students joining the CEP, PEPA or PEPS programmes:

  • Exchange students: a diploma accepted as equivalent to the French baccalauréat, two years of completed higher education at a foreign university, and enrolment at a partner university, which nominates the student by email to Sciences Po Aix
  • Independent students (free movers): a diploma accepted as equivalent to the French baccalauréat; they contact Sciences Po Aix directly ([email protected])

After nomination or first contact, applicants receive an application file to complete with supporting documents; once it is complete and validated, Sciences Po Aix sends a letter of acceptance. Separate deadlines apply for the first semester or full year and for the second semester.

Language Requirements

  • CEP (one-year certificate): French at B2 level, shown by a diploma or certificate from the Alliance Française, Institut Français or another authorised body, or an evaluation by a French teacher at the home university
  • PEPA / PEPS: a French level certificate; B1 is required for the courses designed for international students and B2 for other lectures taught in French. Students taking only English-taught courses still need a French certificate for placement, or take a placement test on the first day of orientation
  • English-taught courses (for non-native speakers): a certificate or test result such as TOEFL or IELTS equivalent to B2 overall
