Seton Hall University is a Catholic university in South Orange, New Jersey (United States), founded in 1856 and named after Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. Its 58-acre main campus is 14 miles from Manhattan, about 30 minutes by train. The School of Law is in nearby Newark, and the Interprofessional Health Sciences (IHS) campus in Clifton and Nutley, opened in 2018, houses the College of Nursing, the School of Health and Medical Sciences and the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine.
The university has more than 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students and offers over 90 majors and programmes, with an average class size of 21 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 14:1. Its schools include the College of Arts and Sciences, the Stillman School of Business, the School of Diplomacy and International Relations and the Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology. Internships, research and clinical placements start from the first year.
International undergraduates can receive the same merit scholarships as US students. Applicants who are academically qualified but need more English can be accepted provisionally into the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program. The Office of International Programs issues the I-20 for the student visa.

An English as a Second Language (ESL) Program, from beginner to advanced level with classes of about 12 students, prepares students for degree study.

International undergraduates apply with the Seton Hall Undergraduate Application or the Common App (first-year only), a personal essay and a non-refundable US$65 fee. They also send SAT, ACT, TOEFL or IELTS scores, an official secondary school transcript in English, a counselor report and a teacher recommendation. Transcripts from outside the United States or Canada need a course-by-course evaluation by a NACES member. Applications are reviewed holistically.
Graduate applicants submit the standard graduate application, original transcripts with certified English translations and a NACES evaluation, and must study full time (at least nine credits per semester). For the I-20, students submit the I-20 application, proof of funding and a copy of their passport.
- Undergraduate: TOEFL 79 (internet-based), IELTS 6.0 or Duolingo 100; not required for native English speakers or applicants who have spent three or more years in an English-speaking country
- Graduate: official TOEFL or IELTS scores (Duolingo accepted by the School of Diplomacy and the Stillman School of Business)
Academically qualified applicants with lower scores may be accepted provisionally into the ESL Program.
Rates for the 2026-27 academic year (fall 2026 to summer 2027), South Orange campus:
- Undergraduate tuition: US$26,920 per semester (full-time, 12-18 credits)
- Undergraduate fees: university fee US$1,145 and mobile computing fee US$335 per semester; new student fee US$380 (one-time)
- Graduate tuition: US$1,585 per credit in most schools; full-time university fee US$735 per semester
- International student fee: US$260 per semester
- Residence hall double room US$6,550 and unlimited meal plan from US$3,050 per semester
International undergraduates can receive the same merit-based scholarships as US students. Most scholarships are awarded automatically on admission based on the academic profile; to be considered, applicants must submit SAT or ACT scores. There is no need-based aid for international students, who must show proof of funding to receive an I-20.
About 80% of first-year students live on campus. On-campus residence halls (Aquinas, Boland, Cabrini, Serra and Xavier) offer single, double and triple rooms, and the university also runs off-campus residences at Ora Manor and Turrell Manor. For 2026-27 a double room on campus costs US$6,550 and a single US$8,250 per semester.
