SUNY Purchase (Purchase College) is a public college of the State University of New York (SUNY), founded in 1967 on the idea that the arts and the liberal arts should share a single campus. Its 500-acre campus is in Purchase, Westchester County, 35 miles north of New York City; it is the only four-year SUNY college in the county. It has 3,426 students, an average class size of 18 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 12:1.

Purchase combines professional conservatory training in dance, film, music, theatre and visual arts with programmes in the liberal arts and sciences, plus some master's programmes such as Art History and Arts and Cultural Management. There are two routes to admission: a standard application for liberal arts and sciences programmes, and an audition or portfolio review for conservatory and arts programmes.

Students come from 30 countries. International applicants follow a specific procedure with credential evaluation and proof of English, and the Office for Global Education provides information on the I-20 for admitted students.

Admission Requirements

International applicants apply according to their status (first year, transfer or graduate), then complete the International Supplemental Form in the applicant portal. All foreign transcripts must be evaluated course by course by a credential evaluator (TEC, WES, ECE or another NACES member) and sent directly to the college; transfer students need a divisional course analysis to receive credit. Applicants also submit proof of English proficiency, one letter of recommendation and, if requested, a copy of their passport. Conservatory and arts programmes additionally require an audition or portfolio review.

Language Requirements

Non-native English speakers must meet these minimum scores:

  • TOEFL iBT: 4.5 (new 2026 scale) or 80 (before 2026); paper-based 550
  • IELTS: 6.5
  • Duolingo English Test: 105

Applicants below the minimum are not eligible for admission; a waiver can be requested by the school counsellor. All admitted students with English as a second language take an English placement exam before their first semester.
