Cornell University is a private research university founded in 1865, with its main campus in Ithaca, in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. It describes itself as a privately endowed research university and a partner of the State University of New York, and it is the federal land-grant institution of New York State. Cornell is a member of the Ivy League.

Its colleges and schools cover more than 100 fields of study, with over 4,000 courses in 100 departments. According to the university, it has 16,138 undergraduate and 10,423 graduate and professional students, and 129 countries are represented in its student body. Besides Ithaca, Cornell has these locations:

  • New York City: Weill Cornell Medicine and the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island
  • Doha, Qatar: Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar
  • Geneva, New York: Cornell AgriTech
  • Washington, D.C.: the Wolpe Center
  • Rome, Italy: architecture, visual arts, art history, urban studies and Italian

The Ithaca campus has residence halls, dining facilities, libraries and research facilities. All admitted students with demonstrated financial need have their full need met, and nearly half of undergraduates receive Cornell grant aid that does not have to be repaid. Students can also study abroad and take part in undergraduate research.

Financial Aid

According to the university, all admitted students with demonstrated financial need have their full need met through Cornell's financial aid packages. Nearly half of undergraduates receive Cornell grant aid, which does not need to be repaid, and Cornell invests more than US$425 million a year in financial aid. Grant funding has more than tripled over the past 20 years.
