Svenska Skolan Mallorca (the Swedish School in Mallorca) is a private Swedish school in the El Terreno district of Palma, south-west of the city centre, housed in an old palace from the turn of the 20th century. It follows the Swedish national curriculum from förskoleklass (pre-school class) to gymnasium (upper secondary), and its education is approved by both the Swedish and the Spanish authorities, so pupils with adequate language skills can move between Swedish and Spanish schools. The school is run by a parents' council and financed by tuition fees and Swedish state funding.
- Förskoleklass (pre-school class)
- Grundskola (compulsory school)
- Gymnasium (upper secondary), with an optional sports profile
Swedish is the main language of instruction, but from year 1 pupils also learn Spanish and English, and about 40% of teaching is in a language other than Swedish. Spanish is taught every day, and Catalan is optional for pupils with good Spanish. Classes are small, with mixed age groups. PE takes place twice a week at a sports centre, on the beach or in the Bellver woods, with sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, swimming and riding. Most pupils have a Swedish or Nordic connection. The school also runs after-school Swedish lessons for children aged 6 to 12 who attend other schools.
