Swarthmore College is a liberal arts college in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, in the north-eastern United States, about 11 miles south-west of Philadelphia. It was founded in 1864 by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), although it is no longer a religious institution. Its 425-acre arboretum campus has a train station on its edge, with direct trains to downtown Philadelphia in about 25 minutes.
Swarthmore has a student-to-faculty ratio of 8:1. It offers more than 600 courses and undergraduate research opportunities across the humanities and performing arts, the social and natural sciences, and engineering.
International students make up about 13% of the student body. First-year applicants follow the same requirements regardless of citizenship; admission is need-aware for international citizens. For admitted students who apply for aid, the college meets 100% of institutionally determined financial need without loans, including for international students. The International Student Center supports international students, who attend a dedicated orientation each August, and more than 95% of students live on campus all four years.

First-year applicants follow the same requirements regardless of citizenship. Applicants attending school outside the U.S. also submit either the free Swarthmore Video Response (recorded in the applicant portal) or an English proficiency test result. Transcripts must be original or certified copies signed by the head of school or counsellor, with official translations, and leaving and national exam results (e.g. IB, A-levels, Gaokao, WASSCE, IGCSE) are expected. InitialView or Vericant videos are optional. Students who have already enrolled at a university must apply as transfer students.
Applicants attending school outside the U.S. submit either an English proficiency result (TOEFL, IELTS or the Duolingo English Test, highest score from a single sitting) or the Swarthmore Video Response. No minimum score is stated. Applicants whose education has mostly been in another language are encouraged to submit a test result.
Need-based Swarthmore Scholarship grant aid is available to first-year international students. For admitted students who applied for aid, the college meets 100% of institutionally determined need, up to full tuition (with an US$800 book allowance), fees, housing, food and supplies, with no loans. Admission is need-aware for international citizens, so applicants must state their intention to apply for aid when applying. The average aid decision for international students admitted to the Class of 2030 was more than US$93,000. The Swarthmore Tuition Guarantee is for domestic students only.
More than 95% of students live on campus all four years, and international and domestic students share the same residence halls. Swarthmore is a cash-free campus: the annual activities fee covers campus events as well as printing and laundry.
