Texas State University (TXST) is a public research university founded in 1899, part of the Texas State University System. Its main campus is in San Marcos, in the Texas Hill Country between Austin and San Antonio (United States); it also has a campus in Round Rock, home to the St. David's School of Nursing, and a campus in Querétaro, Mexico. It holds the Carnegie classification of Doctoral University: Higher research activity, and enrols students from more than 100 nations.

TXST offers more than 200 degree programmes: over 100 undergraduate degrees in fields such as business, education and science, and over 100 master's, specialist and doctoral programmes.

International applicants need, for example, TOEFL iBT 78, IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 105. International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) supports international students. The Good Neighbor Scholarship offers tuition assistance to students from countries of the Americas other than Cuba and the United States, and Mexican F-1 students can apply for Tuition Assistance for Mexican Students (TAMS). First-year students live on campus in residence halls.

Admission Requirements

Applicants who are not US citizens, permanent residents, refugees or asylees apply as international students.

  • Apply online through the TXST Application, Common App or ApplyTexas and pay a non-refundable US$90 fee (no fee waivers for international students)
  • First-year: secondary school transcripts with all marks and graduation or school-leaving exam results (originals or certified copies, with certified English translation)
  • Transfer: official transcripts from every college attended; minimum GPA depends on credits completed (e.g. 2.25 with 30+ credits)
  • English proficiency scores sent directly by the testing agency

Foreign transcripts are evaluated in house (not via WES). Applicants needing a visa should finish at least a month before the deadline; applying by the priority date also meets the scholarship deadline.

Language Requirements

Minimum English scores for admission (no more than two years old):

  • IELTS 6.5 (each section 6.0)

Applicants with a secondary diploma or bachelor's degree from listed English-speaking countries are exempt. Teacher certification programmes require TOEFL iBT.

Estimated cost of attendance for the 2026-27 academic year (fall and spring, 15 hours per semester, living on campus) for non-Texas residents:

Financial Aid

International students can apply for TXST academic scholarships if admitted by the scholarship deadline. Specific options:

  • Good Neighbor Scholarship: for students from countries of the Western Hemisphere other than Cuba and the United States; recipients pay the Texas resident tuition rate. Apply through the BOSS scholarship system by 1 March for the following academic year
  • Tuition Assistance for Mexican Students (TAMS): for F-1 students from Mexico, based on the International Student Financial Aid Application
  • Scholarships of at least US$1,000 can bring a non-resident tuition waiver

Housing

First-year students live on campus in residence halls: there are 23 locations across campus, with 2 more opening in 2027. Rooms are furnished, with high-speed internet, and are shared by up to four students, matched by lifestyle. Bobcat Shuttle buses serve the campus.
