Its history goes back to 1947.
Undergraduate, master's and doctoral students choose from more than 85 academic programmes. The Carnegie Commission on Higher Education lists TAMU-CC as an R2 (high research activity) institution; it runs two institutes and more than 40 research centres and labs, and students at all levels can take part in research on the Gulf region.

For the 2026-27 academic year, estimated tuition and fees for out-of-state and international undergraduates are US$24,469 (12 credit hours per semester). Most first-year students must live on campus for at least two semesters, in the Miramar and Momentum Village residences.
