Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) is a university in historic Nacogdoches, in the heart of East Texas (United States), within reach of both Houston and Dallas, and part of the UT System. The university recently marked 103 years of tradition.

Academic programmes are organised in six colleges: the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, the College of Health Professions (including the DeWitt School of Nursing), the College of Sciences and Mathematics, the James I. Perkins College of Education, Humanities, and Social Sciences, the Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts and the Nelson Rusche College of Business. Bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, minors, certificates and online programmes are offered, in fields such as nursing, education, forestry, agriculture, art and business. Bachelor's admissions are rolling.

The Office of International Programs handles international admissions, I-20 and DS-2019 forms, scholarships and study abroad, and current international students act as ambassadors for new arrivals. International undergraduates need a minimum GPA of 2.5 (2.0 for transfers), a course-by-course credential evaluation and an English score such as IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 100; SAT/ACT scores are not required. A US$1,000 scholarship from the Office of International Programs also entitles recipients to Texas resident tuition rates.

  • SAT/ACT scores only if available (never required for international admission)

Decisions are usually made within one to two weeks of a complete file. Financial documents are not needed for the admission decision; after acceptance, students submit a certification of finances, bank statements and a passport copy to receive the I-20 or DS-2019. Applicants educated in English in listed countries (including the UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada except Quebec and New Zealand) are exempt. Some graduate programmes (educator preparation, counselling, student affairs) require higher levels, such as TOEFL iBT 90.

Financial Aid

The Office of International Programs Scholarship (US$1,000 per year) is awarded to students who show financial need and academic achievement (minimum GPA 2.75 undergraduate, 3.25 graduate) and meet international criteria such as a native language other than English. Recipients of this or another competitive scholarship of at least US$1,000 are entitled to Texas resident tuition rates, which the office puts at about US$4,500 less per semester. International students may also be eligible for other SFA scholarships, such as the Community College Transfer scholarship.
