The University of Tokyo (UTokyo) was established in 1877 as the first national university in Japan. It offers courses in essentially all academic disciplines at undergraduate and graduate level, has 15 graduate schools and has three main campuses: Hongo, Komaba and Kashiwa.
Most undergraduate programmes require fluent Japanese. International undergraduates can study in English in the PEAK programmes or the Global Science Course, and the new UTokyo College of Design will start classes in September 2027, with admission open to all nationalities and a route for applicants with qualifications such as the International Baccalaureate or international A-levels. Many graduate programmes (MA and PhD) can be taken in English or Japanese.
Students from universities with a university-wide exchange agreement can join the University-wide Student Exchange Program, applying through the study abroad office of their home university, and may be able to earn credit there. Japanese language courses are available to international students who are members of the university. Financial support includes Japanese Government (MEXT) and other scholarships, and the university's Housing Office runs dormitories for international students and researchers in the Mejirodai, Oiwake, Komaba and Kashiwa areas.

UTokyo College of Design, 2027 enrolment (programme starts September 2027): online applications from 15 October 2026, 9:00, to 5 November 2026, 17:00 (Japan time).
Graduate admission deadlines are set by each graduate school and published in the outline of graduate admissions.
Housing
The university's Housing Office runs dormitories and other accommodation for international students and researchers in the Mejirodai, Oiwake, Komaba and Kashiwa areas, with both long-term and short-term places that are applied for through the University of Tokyo. Its website also lists rooms available through private agencies. Students who rent an apartment themselves can ask UTokyo to act as their guarantor if they meet the requirements.
