The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) is a public research university in Richardson, a few miles north of downtown Dallas. It was established by the founders of Texas Instruments and holds the Carnegie R1 classification. In fall 2023 it enrolled 30,139 students from 110 countries, including more than 4,500 international students.

Its seven schools offer more than 160 undergraduate and graduate programmes, plus professional certificates and fast-track programmes. Strengths include STEM, management, liberal arts and social sciences, with specialties ranging from audiology and biomedical engineering to public affairs and the arts. Recent additions include a Master of Science in sustainability planning and policy.

The International Center and Intercultural Programs provide immigration advice and transition support, with orientation, English support, cultural festivals, local trips, family events and the iFriend exchange programme. On campus, first-year students live in University Commons suites, while other students can choose University Village or Canyon Creek Heights apartments. Nearly 70% of undergraduates receive need- or merit-based financial aid.

Admission

International students can apply for undergraduate admission; graduate applicants contact the academic department directly. In addition to the standard first-year or transfer requirements, international applicants may need to submit:

  • Official secondary school records from ninth grade through at least the end of 11th grade
  • Official final examination results, such as GCE O-level and A-level certificates
  • For transfer: attested university transcripts, degree certificates and course syllabi
  • Certified English translations of documents in other languages
  • Proof of English proficiency, if from a non-English-speaking country

Language requirements

Minimum scores: TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 105, PTE 67, or completion of level 112 at an ELS Language Center. Scores must be less than two years old. Alternatives include SAT EBRW 560 or ACT English 21, or at least three years at a US high school or an English-medium IB, British-system or AP school.

Scholarships and financial aid

Nearly 70% of undergraduates receive need- or merit-based financial aid, and the university lists freshman and transfer scholarships.

Housing

First-year students live in University Commons residence halls (three-bedroom suites); other students can choose unfurnished University Village or furnished Canyon Creek Heights apartments. Living Learning Communities are open to first-year students, and limited family housing exists. Rates for the 2026-27 academic year range from US$3,250 to US$5,450 per semester depending on floor plan (University Commons US$4,785). The priority deadline for first-year applications is 1 April 2027.
