The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) is a four-year university in downtown Houston, Texas (United States), and part of the University of Houston System. It has grown since 1974 and offers bachelor's and master's degrees aimed at career preparation, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 18 to 1.

Teaching is organised in four colleges:

  • Marilyn Davies College of Business
  • College of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • College of Public Service
  • College of Sciences and Technology

Classes are taught face to face downtown and at satellite locations such as UHD at Northwest, fully online, or in a combination of both. Master's programmes cover 13 disciplines.

Applicants holding a non-immigrant visa apply through International Admissions, paying a non-refundable US$80 application fee. Admission requires TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 6.5. In spring 2026, undergraduate tuition for non-Texas residents is US$655.75 per semester credit hour, and international students also pay a US$45 international student service fee per long semester.

Admission Requirements

Applicants holding a non-immigrant visa apply as international students and pay a non-refundable US$80 application fee.

  • First-year applicants: official evaluations of secondary school transcripts (mark sheets and graduation date in the original language, with a certified English translation if needed) and SAT or ACT scores, or a test-optional request
  • Transfer applicants: official transcripts from all colleges attended; transcripts from outside the US must be evaluated by a credential evaluation service recognised by UHD
  • Graduate applicants: transcripts of the bachelor's degree or equivalent plus programme-specific documents
  • All: an Affidavit of Support and a sponsor's certified bank letter showing at least US$35,000, issued within the past three months

Processing normally takes 4-5 business days once all documents are received.

Language Requirements

Admission to UHD's academic programmes requires a TOEFL score of at least 80 (internet-based), 550 (paper) or 213 (computer-based), or an IELTS Academic score of 6.5. UHD's TOEFL school code is 6922.

Fees

Tuition rates for spring 2026, per semester credit hour:

  • Undergraduate, non-Texas residents: US$655.75
  • Graduate, non-Texas residents: US$807.25

International students also pay an international student service fee of US$45 per long semester, and student health insurance is required each semester. Mandatory fees vary with the number of credit hours. Rates are subject to change.

International undergraduate application deadlines (US$80 non-refundable fee):

  • First-year (freshman): spring term by 30 October 2026, summer 2027 by 2 April 2027, fall 2027 by 1 June 2027
  • Transfer: spring by 30 October 2026, summer by 2 April 2027, fall 2027 by 15 June 2027
