The University of St. Thomas (UST) is a private Catholic university in Houston, Texas (United States), founded on the values of the Basilian Fathers and describing itself as the only Catholic university in Houston. Its campus is in the Montrose neighbourhood, next to the Menil Collection and the Rothko Chapel, and students come from more than 50 countries.

UST is a comprehensive university grounded in the liberal arts, with five schools: the Cameron School of Business, the Carol and Odis Peavy School of Nursing, the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education and Human Services and the School of Theology. Besides bachelor's degrees it offers associate degrees, an accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing for graduates of other fields (as few as 12 months), post-baccalaureate pre-health programmes and a three-year Honors Program based on great books. Graduate programmes include an MBA, master's degrees in data science, diplomacy and public policy, education, counselling and nursing, a PhD in Philosophy, and two master's programmes in theology taught in Spanish.

Applications are made online through the My UST portal at no cost. In the 2026-2027 academic year undergraduate tuition and fees are US$36,904. Students can live on campus in residence halls monitored by security staff.

Undergraduate costs for the 2026-2027 academic year:

  • Tuition and fees (12-18 credit hours, fall and spring): US$36,904 before scholarships
  • Outside that range: US$1,243 per credit hour
  • Estimated housing and food on campus: US$11,530
  • Books and supplies: about US$568

Graduate tuition varies by programme, for example US$1,236 per credit hour for the MBA and most business master's degrees.

Financial Aid

According to the university, more than 90% of new freshmen receive a scholarship on enrolling. The Honors Program awards full-tuition scholarships each year to selected students. The St. Thomas Promise covers four years of undergraduate tuition and regular fees for high-achieving students whose family income is US$50,000 or less.
