Rice University is a private research university on a 300-acre wooded campus in Houston, Texas. It was chartered in 1891 as the William M. Rice Institute and opened in 1912. Rice has 4,776 undergraduates and 4,104 graduate students, with an undergraduate student-to-faculty ratio of just under 6 to 1. It also runs the Rice Global Paris Center and Rice Global India in Bengaluru, and hosts the Baker Institute for Public Policy and the Kinder Institute for Urban Research.
Undergraduates choose from more than 50 majors in seven divisions: architecture, engineering, business, humanities, music, natural sciences and social sciences. Schools include:

- Virani Undergraduate School of Business and Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business

Undergraduate life is organised around residential colleges. International first-year applicants apply through the Common App with a Rice supplement. Rice has expanded its financial aid programme to offer free tuition to families earning up to US$200,000, and most new graduate students receive a fellowship and tuition waiver.

Doctoral and master's programmes across Rice's schools, plus professional master's degrees (including at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business, Architecture and the Shepherd School of Music) and, through the Glasscock School, the Master of Liberal Studies and Master of Arts in Teaching. Qualified doctoral and thesis master's students often receive stipends of US$37,000-40,000 a year.
First-year international applicants apply through Regular Decision, Early Decision I or II (or the Shepherd School of Music process) and submit:
- Common App with the Rice writing supplement
- Non-refundable US$75 application fee (no waivers for international applicants)
- Official high school transcript in English or with a certified translation
- Recommendations from the school counselor and two teachers
- Proof of English proficiency and the International Student Financial Statement
- Portfolio (Architecture) or preliminary submission/audition (Music)
SAT or ACT scores are recommended but optional, and an optional interview can be requested.
Minimum scores: TOEFL iBT 100 for tests taken before 21 January 2026 or 5.0 on the new scale from that date, IELTS 7, Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 185, or Duolingo English Test 130. Applicants with at least two years of full-time study in an English-language curriculum may be exempt.
Rice has expanded its signature financial aid programme to offer free tuition to families earning up to US$200,000. At graduate level, more than 90% of new students receive a Graduate Fellowship and tuition waiver, and doctoral and thesis master's students often receive stipends of US$37,000-40,000 a year. International graduate applicants are encouraged to apply for Fulbright funding.
