Townsville International English School (TIES) is a small English language school in Townsville, in tropical North Queensland, Australia, on the coast of the Great Barrier Reef. It describes itself as a boutique school with a maximum of 35 students. TIES is CRICOS registered (code 03378G), so it can enrol students on a student visa, and it is a NEAS-endorsed ELICOS provider. Its teachers are native speakers and university graduates.

Courses follow a "4+3" timetable: four days of intensive study and a three-day weekend each week.

The school is also a PTE test venue and offers online courses through its My English Pathway website. Enrolment is by online form; the school replies within five days.

Programmes

  • General English (CRICOS 03378G): 20 hours of class plus 2 hours of self-access study per week; 1-54 weeks on a student visa, 1-17 weeks on a working holiday visa, 1-12 weeks on a tourist visa
  • IELTS/PTE Preparation: 11-week part-time course, 14 hours per week (not available as the main course for student visa holders)
  • Pathway Program: 11-week full-time General English course with IELTS/PTE preparation and academic skills, for entry to university, TAFE or training college
  • One-on-One lessons in General English, English for Academic or Specific Purposes, or IELTS preparation
  • Night classes for people working during the day (run when there are enough students)

Housing

  • Homestay with a local family: breakfast and dinner every day, own room with a bed and a desk
  • Shared house: arranged by the student, usually with a bond (security deposit) of two weeks' rent
  • Backpacker lodge: booked by the student or by TIES student services on arrival; suitable only for short stays
