Universidade Federal de Viçosa
University, Graduate school in Viçosa, Brazil
The Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV) is a Brazilian federal university with its main campus in Viçosa, in the state of Minas Gerais. It opened in 1926 as the Escola Superior de Agricultura e Veterinária (Esav), organised and first directed by Professor Peter Henry Rolfs of the University of Florida. Teaching began in 1927, a higher course in agriculture followed the next year and one in veterinary medicine in 1932. In 1948 the state government turned the school into the Universidade Rural do Estado de Minas Gerais (Uremg), and on 15 July 1969 it was federalised and renamed UFV.
UFV combines teaching, research and extension on three campuses:
- Viçosa, the original campus
- Florestal, an area of about 1,500 hectares that first offered technical courses and now also higher-education degrees
- Rio Paranaíba, opened in 2007 with degrees in Administration and Agronomy, later also Information Systems and Food Science
The university also maintains a Historical Museum, a central historical archive and Locus, an institutional repository with almost ten thousand documents, including theses and dissertations.
