Università degli studi di Napoli Federico II

University in Napoli, Italy

The Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II (University of Naples Federico II) is a large university in Naples, southern Italy, and, according to its international site, one of the oldest universities founded by a head of state. It has about 80,000 students, 178 degree programmes, 4 schools and 26 departments, with sites in the historic centre, the hospital area, Portici and Fuorigrotta. According to the university, eight of its subjects are among the top 100 in the world in the GRAS 2026 ranking.

Its programmes cover thirteen teaching areas at bachelor's, master's and single-cycle level, plus PhDs, specialisation schools, university master's courses and academies such as the Apple Developer Academy. Most teaching is in Italian, and degrees taught in Italian require B2 Italian; some programmes are taught in English, such as Medicine and Surgery in English, and are listed in an international course catalogue. The university has more than 2,000 agreements with foreign universities, takes part in Erasmus+ and Fulbright exchanges and offers double degrees. International students get support from SAFE UNINA, a free welcome desk that issues the Italian tax code, and the University Language Centre (CLA). Non-EU applicants living abroad pre-enrol through the Universitaly portal. The academic year has two semesters, September to February and February to July.

Admission

EU applicants, and non-EU applicants legally resident in Italy or the EU, send their academic documents to the coordinator of the chosen course, who checks the entry requirements; documents may include translations, legalisation, the Diploma Supplement, exam certificates and a CIMEA (ENIC-NARIC) certificate. Non-EU applicants living abroad pre-enrol through the Universitaly portal and then apply for a study visa at the Italian embassy or consulate; the university does not issue admission letters for visas, and pre-enrolment alone is not admission. Courses with restricted access require an admission test. Enrolment requires a passport copy, application form, photo, tax code, proof of a residence permit application and a declaration of value or CIMEA certificate. For the study visa, Italy requires proof of means of €10,179.85 per year.

Language requirements

Degree programmes taught in Italian require Italian at CEFR level B2, shown with a CLIQ-recognised certificate uploaded to Universitaly or through an Italian language test arranged by the course coordinator. Programmes taught in English do not require Italian; an international English certificate (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge, etc.) is useful for the visa application.
