The Université Bordeaux Montaigne is a university in the Bordeaux area of France specialising in the arts, languages, literature, humanities and social sciences. It has more than 17,000 students and about 1,300 teaching and administrative staff. Its main campus is in Pessac, on the 235-hectare university estate shared by Talence, Pessac and Gradignan, which also has student housing.
The university awards nearly 200 national degrees through three faculties (UFR) and two institutes:
- UFR Humanités
- UFR Langues et civilisations
- UFR Sciences des territoires et de la communication
- IUT Bordeaux Montaigne
- Institut de journalisme Bordeaux Aquitaine (IJBA), in central Bordeaux
Some teaching is in English and Spanish at its Agen university centre, and it is associated with the INSPÉ for teacher training. International students can come on exchange programmes or enrol for a full degree, and an International Welcome Desk on campus supports them; in 2024 the university's "Bienvenue en France" label was raised to three stars. Its DEFLE department teaches French as a foreign language (day and evening courses, summer courses) and is a DELF-DALF exam centre.
