Université Rennes 2 is a public university in Rennes, in Brittany (western France), focused on arts, literature, languages, and the humanities and social sciences. It was founded in 1969 and has around 20,000 students in 24 teaching departments, 21 research units (5 of them joint units with the CNRS) and 5 doctoral schools. Teaching takes place on the Villejean and La Harpe campuses in Rennes and on the Mazier campus in Saint-Brieuc.
International applicants to degree programmes must show at least a B2 level of French. EU applicants apply for the first year of a licence (bachelor's degree) through Parcoursup like French students; applicants from many non-EU countries apply through Campus France. Exchange students are handled by the International Office.
The university's French language centre, the CIREFE, on the Villejean campus, teaches French as a foreign language either alongside regular studies or as a full-time course:
- Evening courses of 4 hours a week, with one semester free for exchange students
- Full-time intensive courses of 15 to 20 hours a week, for a semester or a year
The International Office keeps a quota of university residence rooms for exchange students, and the Rennes International Mobility Centre (CMI) helps with the search for private housing.

Undergraduate study covers arts, literature, languages, and the humanities and social sciences, with licence (bachelor's), professional licence and DEUST programmes. The CIREFE centre teaches French as a foreign language at the six CEFR levels:
- Evening French courses: 4 hours a week, 6 ECTS credits
- Full-time intensive French: 15 to 20 hours a week, 30 ECTS credits per semester
- Optional artistic workshops in French (drama, music, journalism, film, radio), free for CIREFE students
Admission for international students who are not on an exchange depends on nationality and level:
- EU nationals (and Swiss, Andorran and Monegasque applicants) applying for the first year of a licence (bachelor's degree) use Parcoursup, like French students
- Applicants from countries covered by the Campus France "Études en France" procedure (including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and the United States) apply online through Campus France, which is also needed for the French visa
- Other non-EU applicants use the DAP application through Campus France or a French embassy
- Applicants for the second or third year of a licence or for a master's degree apply through Campus France or the e-candidate platform of Rennes 2
Degree programmes require French at CEFR level B2, shown with a TCF, DELF or DALF certificate. Non-French-speaking applicants without a B2 certificate who apply through the DAP procedure must take the TCF for DAP test; candidates living outside France take it in their own country. Applicants below B2 are advised to take one or two semesters of French at the university's CIREFE language centre first.
Rooms in the university residences are in high demand and are requested on the university registration form; the International Office keeps a quota of rooms for exchange students, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Rooms are 9 m² with their own shower and toilet unit and a shared kitchen on each floor. The Rennes International Mobility Centre (CMI) helps with private housing, and students may be eligible for the ALS housing allowance.
