Universität Heidelberg

Heidelberg University (Universität Heidelberg), also known as Ruperto Carola, is a research university in Heidelberg, Germany. It was established in 1386 by Ruprecht I, Elector Palatine, and is Germany's oldest university. The university describes itself as an internationally networked research university dedicated to research-oriented teaching. It has been funded as a University of Excellence since 2007 and received the title again in March 2026. The university is system accredited.

As a comprehensive university, Heidelberg covers the humanities, law and the social sciences as well as the natural and life sciences, including medicine. Degree options include:

• Doctorates, for candidates who have completed a university degree
• International and foreign-language study programmes

Students can study full-time or part-time. International students can also come for short-term study without taking a degree, or through exchange programmes. The heiSKILLS Competence and Language Centre offers language courses and career-related skills alongside the degree. Since the 2025/26 winter semester, enrolment has been fully digital, and a counselling service supports international students.
