The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a public university and academic medical center in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. Its roots go back to the founding of the Medical College of Alabama in 1859 and the opening of the University of Alabama's Birmingham Extension Center in 1936; UAB became an independent institution in 1969. It is the only public four-year university in the state's largest metropolitan area and an R-1 research university, with research expenditures of $915 million in fiscal year 2025.
UAB offers more than 280 degree and certificate programmes across a wide range of fields:
- Undergraduate degrees, for example in biomedical engineering
- Master's degrees and PhDs
- Professional and dual degrees such as the MBA/MD
- Graduate and undergraduate certificates
- Online programmes
Undergraduates have access to research opportunities, pre-professional programmes and study abroad. Students, faculty and staff come from more than 140 countries, and there is a separate admissions route for international students. Campus life includes more than 450 student organisations and 18 NCAA sports teams in the American Athletic Conference. Financial aid includes UAB and external scholarships, federal loans and grants, and work-study.
