Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC) is a university in Christchurch (Ōtautahi), New Zealand, which has been teaching students from New Zealand and abroad for more than 150 years. It has more than 26,000 students from over 100 countries.

Alongside its other study options, UC offers more than 100 postgraduate programmes, taught by coursework or research thesis, plus doctorates such as the PhD, Doctor of Musical Arts, Doctor of Education and Doctor of Health Sciences. Postgraduate study areas include:

Some courses are also available online through UC Online (Tuihono UC). Enrolment for 2027 study is open. International students must show proficiency in written and spoken English, and health and travel insurance is required. Students on an approved reciprocal exchange programme, and PhD students living in New Zealand, do not pay international tuition fees. Housing options include halls of residence on campus, homestays and private rented flats, and UC awards scholarships every year.

Graduate programmes

UC has more than 100 postgraduate programmes, either research-based (independent study and thesis) or taught by coursework; some coursework degrees are open to students from any study background. Areas include Arts, Business, Education, Engineering (including Product Design and Forestry), Health, Law and Science. Doctoral degrees include the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA), Doctor of Education (EdD) and Doctor of Health Sciences (DHSc).

Housing

UC's options include:

  • Halls of residence on campus, with academic support and social activities
  • Homestay or private board with a local family
  • Private rented flats, popular from the second year onwards
  • Temporary accommodation: furnished rooms paid by the day or week
  • Summer stays at selected halls for students enrolled in summer courses, booked directly with the hall

International students are advised to arrange accommodation before travelling to Christchurch.
