The University at Albany (UAlbany) is a public research university of the State University of New York (SUNY) in Albany, the capital of New York State. It traces its origins to a teacher-training school founded in 1844 and joined SUNY in 1962 as one of its four University Centers. Today it has over 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students in nine schools and colleges and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
UAlbany offers undergraduate majors and more than 150 graduate programmes. Undergraduate areas include:
- Business, economics and accounting
- Computer science, cybersecurity and engineering
- Atmospheric and climate science, biology, chemistry, physics
- Criminal justice, emergency management, political science, public health
- Psychology, education, humanities and languages
Many majors offer a combined bachelor's and master's option. International undergraduates apply through the SUNY Application or the Common Application; those who do not yet meet the English requirement can be admitted conditionally through the Intensive English Language Program (IELP). Global Excellence Scholarships are awarded to incoming international students on merit. Undergraduates are required to live on campus for their first two years.

International undergraduate applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Steps:
- Apply through the SUNY Application or the Common Application and pay the application fee (fee waived during UAlbany's free application season until 19 October 2026 and SUNY Free Application Weeks, 19 October to 2 November 2026)
- Official secondary school (and college) transcripts, with certified English translation; evaluations by The Evaluation Company or WES are accepted but not required
- English proficiency scores if you studied outside the US and English is not your native language (SAT/ACT optional)
- International Student Financial Statement with bank statement and passport copy
- One recommendation letter (first-year applicants)
Minimum English scores for undergraduate admission:
- TOEFL iBT 70 (4 on the new scale); TOEFL PBT 523
- IELTS 6.0
- PTE 50
- Duolingo 95
- Cambridge English B2
- Also accepted: SAT ERWS 400 (Reading sub-score 22), ACT English and Reading 19, AS/A Level English, IB Higher Level English A 4
Applicants below these scores can apply for conditional admission through the Intensive English Language Program (IELP).
Full-time tuition and fees for international students, 2026-27 academic year (Fall 2026 and Spring 2027):
- Undergraduate: US$35,499.01 (Fall 2026: US$14,140 tuition plus US$2,989.73 fees)
- MBA: US$33,031.01
- Master of Social Work: US$29,361.01
- All other master's and PhD programmes: US$31,811.01
On-campus housing (Quads standard double) and meal plan for 2026-27: US$17,205. New undergraduates also pay a one-time New Student Fee (US$265 for first-year students).
UAlbany Global Excellence Scholarships are awarded to incoming international students based on academic achievement and other qualifications. The maximum award is US$20,500 per year for first-year students (up to US$82,000 over four years) and US$14,500 for selected transfer students; scholarships are renewable for continuously enrolled full-time students who keep the required grade point average. Graduate students can be considered for a limited number of merit-based fellowships, assistantships and tuition scholarships through their department.
