University College Birmingham (UCB) is a university in the centre of Birmingham, England, with over 10,000 students from around 90 countries. It specialises in vocational, career-focused courses in both higher and further education and also offers apprenticeships. Its campus buildings are in Birmingham city centre, and the university states that its international community has more than 1,400 students, supported by a dedicated international team.

Admission Requirements

Students from outside the EU apply directly through UCB's online application form; undergraduate applicants can also apply through UCAS if they are applying to more than one university. After registering and choosing a level of study, the application is assessed by the Admissions Team and an offer is made based on the information and documents supplied. Country-specific entry requirements are published on the website, and regional offices and education agents can help with applications. Most international students will need a visa.

Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English need an approved English test for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees:

  • IELTS (Academic or UKVI) 6.0 with no band below 5.5, depending on the course
  • TOEFL iBT 72 (Reading 18, Writing 17, Listening 17, Speaking 20)
  • LanguageCert: pass at B2 level; IELTS Indicator with the same scores
  • International Foundation Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism: UKVI IELTS 5.0, no band below 4.5

IELTS results must be dated within two years of the course start. Pre-sessional English courses of 6, 8 or 15 weeks are offered.

Fees

International tuition fees for 2026/27 (September 2026 and February 2027 entry), per year:

  • Undergraduate (Band 1 courses): £16,500
  • Accelerated undergraduate: £19,000
  • International Foundation Diploma: £11,000
  • Postgraduate (Band 1 courses): £17,500
  • Pre-sessional English: £2,180 (6 weeks), £3,500 (8 weeks), £4,500 (15 weeks)

The fee set for an international student's first year is kept for the following years of the same course. Some business and finance courses are in a higher fee band.

Financial Aid

UCB offers more than 100 merit-based scholarships for international students from the September 2026 and February 2027 intakes, including the Vice Chancellor's Award, Dean's Award, Women in Leadership, Rising Talent and NextGen Innovator scholarships, and a Sustainable Development Scholarship for postgraduates. International undergraduates also receive two automatic scholarships:

  • Early Action Scholarship: up to £3,500 for meeting deposit deadlines
  • Continuation Scholarship: £2,000 for the second and third years

Former UCB degree students who progress to a new degree receive a 25% or 20% tuition scholarship.

Housing

International students coming to UCB for the first time are offered a room in the university's halls of residence if they hold an offer, return the residency agreement, deposit and pre-payment by the offer date, and come without dependants (unless agreed in advance). Documents must be returned within 14 days of the offer. The halls, The Maltings, are in central Birmingham, about a 15-minute walk from campus. Students living outside the city should be within 90 minutes' travel of UCB.
