Birmingham City University (BCU) is a large university in the heart of Birmingham, the second largest city in the UK, with a focus on practice-based learning. According to the university, it had around 31,000 students from 100 countries (HESA 2021/22). It teaches on its City Centre and City South campuses and has invested over £500 million in industry-standard facilities. In the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2023 it received Gold for student experience and an overall rating of Silver.

Courses range from foundation and undergraduate degrees to taught master's and research degrees, full-time, part-time or online; the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire offers acting and music courses. Students can gain experience through work placements and years abroad, and some undergraduate courses start in January.

International students whose qualifications are slightly below direct-entry level can take a foundation or pre-Master's programme, partly through Birmingham City University International College (BCUIC). Most courses require IELTS 6.0 with no band below 5.5. Self-funding international undergraduates starting in September 2026 or January 2027 receive a guaranteed £5,000 scholarship. First-year students are guaranteed accommodation, and BCU has representatives in many countries.

Admission Requirements

Undergraduate applications for September 2027 entry are made online through UCAS from 1 September 2026; the main UCAS deadline is in January 2027, and applications received after the June 2027 deadline go into Clearing. Many courses ask for a digital portfolio. Applicants whose qualifications are slightly below direct-entry level can take a foundation or pre-Master's programme. International students must pay 50% of the tuition fee before receiving their CAS. BCU works with agents and representatives in many countries.

Language Requirements

Most courses require IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5 (CEFR B2 in each skill); some courses ask for more. Other accepted tests include Cambridge C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency (169 for IELTS 6.0 equivalence), Trinity ISE, LanguageCert Academic and the university's own BCU English Proficiency Test (EPT) Online. Results are normally valid for two years. Applicants with a degree from a majority English-speaking country may be exempt, and pre-sessional English courses are available.

Financial Aid

For 2026/27, BCU offers a guaranteed £5,000 scholarship to all self-funding international students joining a full-time undergraduate degree in September 2026 or January 2027, applied as a tuition fee discount of £3,000 in year one and £2,000 in year two. No separate application is needed. Foundation years and other sub-degree courses and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire acting and music courses are excluded, and students can receive only one BCU scholarship. Separate international scholarships exist for postgraduate students.

Housing

BCU works with accommodation providers in Birmingham city centre and near the City South campus to guarantee accommodation for first-year students. Rooms are single-occupancy and self-catered, and students booking through BCU share flats with other first-year BCU students. For 2026-27, weekly costs of the recommended residences range from £120 to £210. International students can apply for accommodation once they have received an offer.
