The University of Cincinnati (UC) is a public research university in Cincinnati, Ohio, founded in 1819 and classified as a Carnegie R1 research university. It is known as the birthplace of cooperative education: degree programmes combine classroom learning with paid co-op placements and internships. UC had 54,437 students in fall 2026 and offers 454 degrees across its Uptown campus and two regional campuses, UC Blue Ash College and UC Clermont College.

Undergraduates are admitted directly to their chosen major in fields ranging from arts and sciences, business and engineering to design, architecture, allied health and music (College-Conservatory of Music). UC also offers dozens of master's and PhD programmes and has professional schools of law, medicine and pharmacy.

An international admissions team guides undergraduate applicants. Students who meet the academic requirements but need to improve their English can receive conditional admission and study first at the ELS English Language Center on the main campus. International students can receive scholarships of up to US$15,000 a year on the main campus, first-year international students live on campus, and exchange semesters are also possible.

More information about Graduate Programs

UC offers dozens of master's and PhD programmes through its Graduate School and has three professional schools: law, medicine and pharmacy. Dual degree options and guaranteed admission programmes are also available.

Admission Requirements

International first-year applicants apply through the Common Application, pay a non-refundable US$100 fee and submit official school transcripts (in English or with a certified translation) and English test scores; SAT/ACT scores and a letter of recommendation are optional. A college preparatory curriculum is expected, typically four years of mathematics and three to four years of science. Early Action gives priority for the more competitive programmes. Students who meet the academic requirements but not yet the English requirement can apply for conditional admission; applicants with college credit apply as transfer students.

Language Requirements

All international students must prove English proficiency with a test score (valid for two years) or one of four exemptions. Minimum scores for most Uptown colleges, such as Arts and Sciences:

  • IELTS 6.5 overall (6.0 writing and speaking)
  • TOEFL iBT 79 (before January 2026) or 4.0 (from January 2026)
  • Duolingo English Test 100
  • PTE Academic 53, Cambridge C1 Advanced 176, ELS Level 112
  • SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 480 or ACT English 19

Requirements vary by college. The ELS Language Center on the main campus offers English study for conditionally admitted students.

Financial Aid

International students can receive scholarships of up to US$15,000 per academic year on the main campus or up to US$4,000 on the regional campuses; there is no separate scholarship application. Paid co-op placements are part of many degrees, and the university lists external scholarship resources for international students.

Housing

First-year international students must live in on-campus housing during their first year; the main campus has 18 residence halls. The regional campuses (Blue Ash and Clermont) have no on-campus housing.
