The University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston) is Boston's only public research university, classified as R1, on a 120-acre waterfront campus minutes from downtown Boston. It has about 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students, a student-to-faculty ratio of 16:1 and average class sizes of about 28 students.
UMass Boston offers more than 200 undergraduate and graduate programmes, including more than 80 undergraduate degree programmes, taught in person, hybrid or online; popular fields include psychology, biology and exercise and health sciences. Graduate options include master's and PhD programmes, for example in applied linguistics and applied physics.
More than 2,000 international students from 136 countries attend, supported by International Student and Scholar Services for immigration matters. International first-year students apply through the UMass Boston Application or the Common App and can apply test-optional; those with a GPA of 3.3 or higher are considered for merit scholarships of up to US$10,000 a year.
