The University of North Dakota (UND) is a public research university in Grand Forks, North Dakota (United States). Founded in 1883, it is the largest institution in the North Dakota University System, is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and holds the Carnegie R1 classification (very high research activity). UND has close to 1,000 international students from 103 nations.

The university offers more than 250 on-campus and online programmes at undergraduate, graduate and professional level. It is home to North Dakota's only law school and medical school. Main areas include:

All courses are taught in English. The UND International Center helps international students with academic support, student visas and adjustment to American culture, and some scholarships are open to international students. Admission Requirements

Undergraduates apply online with a non-refundable US$35 fee and send:

  • Official records from all secondary schools attended, translated if not in English, and a copy of the passport; first-year applicants should have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher on a 4-point scale
  • Transfer students: a course-by-course evaluation of college transcripts by a NACES-approved service and a GPA of at least 2.0
  • Proof of English proficiency

Graduate applicants pay the same fee and submit English transcripts, passport copy, diploma, three references and a statement of purpose. There are fall, spring and summer intakes; deadlines are on the admissions website.

Language Requirements

  • Undergraduate: TOEFL iBT 71 (tests before 21 January 2026) or 3.5 (from 21 January 2026), IELTS 6.0, PTE Academic 50, Duolingo 105, or ELS Intensive Level 112
  • Graduate: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 4.0, Duolingo 110 or ELS Level 112; a bachelor's degree from an institution teaching in English in certain listed countries is also accepted

IELTS scores must be no more than three years old.

Financial Aid

Some UND scholarships are open to international and Canadian students. Candidates can search the Scholarship Central database or contact One-Stop Student Services. According to the university, it awards nearly US$11.8 million in academic scholarships to more than 4,100 undergraduates each year.

Housing

UND has eight residence halls and more than 600 on-campus apartments. First-year students must live in a residence hall for their first full academic year, and residence hall students must buy a meal plan. In the 2026-27 academic year, residence hall rooms cost from US$5,240 (double room) to US$7,600 (super single) per year, excluding meals. Apartment rents include utilities and internet, except at Hamline.
