The University of Notre Dame is a private Catholic research university in Notre Dame, Indiana (United States), next to South Bend. It was founded in 1842 by Rev. Edward Sorin, C.S.C., and the Congregation of Holy Cross, and is a fully residential university with 8,923 undergraduate and 4,206 graduate and professional students. According to the university, it is ranked 12th in the nation by College Consensus (2025, average of Forbes, Money and U.S. News & World Report).
Programmes are taught in the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Science, the College of Engineering, the Mendoza College of Business, the School of Architecture, the Keough School of Global Affairs and the Law School, from bachelor's degrees to master's, PhD, MBA, JD and LLM programmes.
More than 36,000 international students have studied at Notre Dame since 1842, and international students made up 8% of the first-year class entering in autumn 2025. Admission is need-blind for all undergraduate applicants, including international students, and the university meets 100% of demonstrated need without loans; international applicants requesting aid submit the CSS Profile. Applications are made through the Common Application or the Coalition Application; non-native English speakers submit TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo or PTE Academic results.

International first-year applicants apply through the Common Application or the Coalition Application and submit:
- The Notre Dame Writing Supplement
- Official secondary school transcripts, including national examination results
- A letter of evaluation from a teacher in a core academic subject (counselor evaluation recommended)
- TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo or PTE Academic results if applicable, sent by the testing agency
- A non-refundable US$85 fee (waivers available)
- The CSS Profile if requesting need-based aid
ACT/SAT scores are optional through the 2026-27 cycle; from the 2027-28 cycle (entry in autumn 2028) they are required again, with IB, A-level and French baccalaureate predicted results accepted instead for students outside the US.
An English test is required if the applicant's first language is not English or secondary education was not mainly in English, unless a waiver applies. Accepted tests: TOEFL (not the Special Home Edition), IELTS, PTE Academic and the Duolingo English Test (DET). No minimum scores are published on the application page; TOEFL code 1841.
Undergraduate admission is need-blind for all applicants, including international students, and Notre Dame meets 100% of demonstrated financial need without loans. Through Pathways to Notre Dame, families with incomes up to US$150,000 receive aid covering at least full tuition, and up to US$200,000 at least half tuition. More than 70% of undergraduates receive financial aid. International applicants requesting need-based aid must submit the CSS Profile.
