The Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Río Piedras (UPR Río Piedras) is the Río Piedras campus of the University of Puerto Rico, in San Juan. The campus describes itself as the research university of Puerto Rico and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Undergraduate bachelor's programmes are offered in business administration, architecture (environmental design), natural sciences, social sciences, communication and information, education, general studies and humanities. The campus also has a School of Law, a Graduate School of Planning and a range of master's and doctoral programmes, which it describes as the most comprehensive in the Caribbean.

Applicants from secondary schools outside Puerto Rico and the United States apply online, take the College Board PAA and/or SAT, and need an equivalency certificate from the Puerto Rico Department of Education. Students with university studies abroad submit apostilled transcripts or a WES evaluation, and graduate applicants need a NACES course-by-course evaluation. The Dirección de Asuntos de Relaciones Internacionales (DARI) helps international students with visa procedures; the university estimates living costs at US$19,000 a year for the F-1 visa paperwork.

Admission

Secondary school applicants from outside Puerto Rico and the United States:

  • Online admission application
  • College Board PAA (Prueba de Evaluación y Admisión Universitaria) and/or SAT
  • Certified secondary school transcript
  • Equivalency certificate issued by the Puerto Rico Department of Education (DEPR)

Transfer applicants with university studies abroad submit an apostilled or ministry-authenticated transcript or a WES course evaluation. Graduate applicants with foreign degrees need a NACES course-by-course evaluation. For the I-20 (F-1 visa), admitted students show funds for at least one year; the estimated cost of living is US$19,000 per year.
