Worcester Polytechnic Institute

University, Graduate school in Worcester, The United States

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is a technological university in Worcester, in the New England region of the United States, founded in 1865 on the principle that students learn best by applying classroom theory to real-world problems. Its campus is on a hilltop in New England's second-largest city. WPI is classified as an R1 research institution by the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation.

Teaching is organised in four schools: the School of Arts & Sciences, the Business School, the School of Engineering and the Global School. More than 70 bachelor's, master's, PhD and certificate programmes are offered on campus and online. Projects are at the core of the undergraduate curriculum, known as the WPI Plan, and students can work on projects at more than 50 project centres in the Americas, Africa, Asia-Pacific and Europe. Fields include:

  • Aerospace, biomedical, robotics and fire protection engineering
  • Computer science and data science
  • Interactive media and game development
  • Business
  • Sciences, mathematics, humanities and social sciences

First-year students apply through the Common App; there are separate application routes for transfer and graduate applicants. WPI has just over 2,400 residential students, with housing from traditional residence halls to apartment- and suite-style arrangements, and more than 270 student clubs.
