Yanapuma Spanish School is a Spanish language school with branches in Quito and Cuenca, Ecuador. It was started in September 2006 by a group of Spanish teachers and works as a social enterprise: profits from the Quito school help fund the Yanapuma Foundation, a non-profit organisation that runs sustainable development projects with indigenous and marginalised communities. The Quito school is in a colonial-style building in the historic centre, and the Cuenca school is two blocks from Parque Calderón.

Teaching follows the communicative language teaching approach and is based on Instituto Cervantes recommendations, the Common European Framework of Reference and ACTFL standards. Group classes have at most five students. The range includes:

• Standard (3 hours a day) and Intensive (4 hours a day) immersion courses in small groups
• One-to-one classes and classes for couples or friends
• Study and Travel programmes in the Amazon, the Andes, the Pacific coast and the Galapagos Islands
• Introductory and Professional Medical Spanish, with practice in a Quito hospital or clinic
• DELE exam preparation, in Ecuador or online
• Spanish for children

Standard courses start on the first and third Monday of each month. Teachers write a weekly progress report for each student, which can serve as the basis for a credit report for colleges and universities. The school arranges homestays with local families in both cities, with half board and Wi-Fi, 5 to 30 minutes' walk from the school, and can also book hostels and hotels.

• Standard Immersion: 3 hours a day in a group, morning or afternoon, starting the first and third Monday of each month
• Intensive Immersion: 4 hours a day in a group
• Exclusive group class for couples or friends: 4 hours a day, any start day
• One-to-one classes: minimum 2 hours a day, any start day
• Quito cultural programme: 20 hours of individual classes and 4 excursions with a teacher
• Study and Travel: Baños, Ruta del Sol, Ruta de los Volcanes, Amazon, an indigenous community and Galapagos tours
• Medical Spanish: Introductory (three one-week, 20-hour courses) and Professional (80 hours plus four weeks of practice; intermediate level required)
• DELE preparation at all levels, and business or academic Spanish

Groups have a maximum of five students. Standard courses include materials and a Yanapuma certificate.

Yanapuma arranges homestays with local host families in Quito and Cuenca, for short or long stays:

• Homestay: individual room, breakfast and dinner included, Wi-Fi, 5 to 30 minutes' walk from the school
• Hostels and hotels: individual or dorm rooms, en suite or shared bathrooms, with or without breakfast

A private airport transfer in Quito (about 50 minutes) can also be booked.
