About Finance Schools and Programs in Madrid, Spain

Finance is the study of how companies, banks, insurers and governments raise, invest and manage money. Students learn financial accounting and analysis, corporate finance, financial markets and products, risk management and the mathematics and statistics behind them. Actuarial science is the most quantitative branch: it applies probability and statistics to insurance, pensions and financial risk. In Madrid there are finance programmes at every level, from vocational training to official master's degrees.

How the qualifications are organised

Spanish bachelor's degrees (grados) generally have 240 ECTS credits (four years), and official master's degrees (máster universitario) 60, 90 or 120 credits. Finance appears in bachelor's degrees in finance, in economics and finance, and in business administration (ADE) with a finance track; actuarial science is taught at master's level, as the Máster Universitario en Ciencias Actuariales y Financieras. Business schools also run their own master's programmes (títulos propios), which are not official degrees. The ministry's Registro de Universidades, Centros y Títulos (RUCT) shows whether a programme is official.

At vocational level, the official FP qualification is Técnico Superior en Administración y Finanzas, a higher-level cycle (grado superior) of 2,000 hours in the Administration and Management family.

Admission and recognition

Students who finished secondary school outside Spain usually apply first to UNEDasiss, the UNED service that assesses international students' academic records and runs the tests needed to enter a Spanish bachelor's degree, and then apply to each university. Master's programmes require a previous university degree, often in economics, business, mathematics or engineering.

Holders of a foreign degree can ask the ministry for a declaration of equivalence (declaración de equivalencia), which certifies the academic level of the degree (bachelor's or master's). Full recognition (homologación) is only needed to practise a regulated profession in Spain.

Careers

Finance graduates work in banking, insurance, asset management, financial analysis, corporate finance departments, auditing and consultancy. Actuarial graduates specialise in pricing insurance, calculating reserves and pensions, and measuring risk.
