Located in the city of Niigata, the International University of Japan (IUJ) is a renowned institution of higher learning offering graduate programs leading to Masters Degrees in several subject areas under two graduate schools: the Graduate School of International Relations (GSIR) and the Graduate School of International Management (GSIM).

History of the International University of Japan

Below is a timeline highlighting the history of the International University of Japan:

  • 1976- The Foundation for the Establishment of the International University of Japan was formed.
  • 1979- The Charter of establishment of the Foundation for the Establishment of the International University of Japan was issued.
  • 1982- The Charter of the Educational Foundation of the International University of Japan was approved. The International University of Japan and Graduate School of International Relations were established. As of this date, The Ministry of Education fully approves of, and accredits IUJ and GSIR as a Japanese private university under its authority.
  • 1983- Students for the Graduate School of International Relations were accepted.
  • 1985- The Center for Japan-U.S. Relations and the Institute of Middle Eastern Studies were established.
  • 1988- The Graduate School of International Management was established with full approval and accreditation from The Ministry of Education of Japan; Matsushita Library & Information Center was established; The International Management Research Institute was established; Students for the Graduate School of International Management were accepted.
  • 1991- The Research Institute of Asian Development and the Global Communication Center were established.
  • 1995- The Graduate School of International Relations reorganized its curriculum into two programs; International Relations Program and International Development Program.
  • 1997- The Center for Japan-U.S. Relations, the Institute of Middle Eastern Studies, the International Management Research Institute and the Research Institute of Asian Development were unified.
  • 2001- Accepted the first Students for the E-Business Management program (One-year Master's Degree program) of the Graduate School of International Management.
  • 2005- The International Peace Studies Program (IPSP) of the Graduate School of International Relations was started.
  • 2009-  The Public Management and Policy Analysis Program (PMPP) of the Graduate School of International Relations began operating.
  • 2010- The International Peace Studies Program (IPSP) of the Graduate School of International Relations was integrated into the International Relations Program (IRP).
  • 2013- IUJ signs agreement with Meiji Univ. on Business Grouping; One-Year MBA of the Graduate School of International Management was started.

Mission of the International University of Japan

The mission of the University of Japan is to train future leaders who can contribute to the practical resolution of global problems facing people living in various countries and regions in the world, as well as involved organizations, including governments, companies, and NGOs, and to extend public and social benefits globally.

In order to accomplish this mission, the International University of Japan offers a place to foster these leaders' professional knowledge and skills in the areas of politics, economics and management, and to help them achieve a deeper understanding of human respect for different cultures.

The International University of Japan, Japan's oldest graduate school, was founded in 1982 with the goal of preparing leaders who can contribute to the practical resolution of global problems facing the world.

IUJ is Japan's oldest English-based graduate school, with 100% of its regular courses offered in English.

The International University of Japan’s global environment continues outside of the classroom, particularly because almost all IUJ students live together on campus. The International University of Japan provides excellent Career Counseling Services, giving students one-to-one career advice before they enroll and counseling and job search assistance during their time at IUJ. As a result, the school has a very high rate of employment for students within three months after graduation. The International University of Japan is located about 230 kilometers northwest of Tokyo. The nearest town to the school is Urasa and it takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to get to Urasa from Tokyo by the Joetsu-Shinkansen or Bullet train. The Joetsu-Shinkansen and the Kan'etsu Expressways provide easy access to Tokyo and Niigata City. Free shuttle-bus service connects IUJ with the town and the Urasa railway station.
