About Bournemouth

Bournemouth is a seaside town on the south coast of England, about 2.5 hours from London, with seven miles of sandy beach. Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, the council area that includes the town, had around 400,200 inhabitants at the 2021 census, up 5.6% since 2011, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Bournemouth is above all a destination for learning English. Students come for courses of a few weeks to a full year, combining classes with life by the sea and accommodation with host families or in student residences.

  • Anglo-Continental is accredited by the British Council, is a member of English UK and has more than 75 years of experience. It offers general English, academic study, exam preparation and programmes for the over-50s, as well as courses for professionals, English for aviation personnel and teacher training. It is an official IELTS test centre.
  • Europa School of English, in the town centre about 10 minutes from the beach and shops, is accredited by the British Council and has offered language courses for more than 30 years. Its General English course has 20 lessons a week, with optional add-ons such as 10 extra intensive lessons or IELTS preparation. Some students stay one or two weeks, others half a year or a whole year.
  • Bournemouth City College (BCC), founded in July 2007 and accredited by the British Council, teaches English, business and foundation courses to students aged 18 and over.

When comparing schools, check British Council accreditation, the minimum age, the number of lessons per week and whether the course prepares for an exam such as IELTS.
