About Cochabamba

Cochabamba lies in a fertile valley of the eastern Andes in central Bolivia, at an altitude of about 2,500 metres, and is one of the country's main cities. Bolivia counted 11,365,333 inhabitants in its 2024 census, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). Cochabamba is known as the "City of Eternal Spring" for its mild, dry climate, and the surrounding department produces most of Bolivia's fruit and vegetables.

For international students, Cochabamba is above all a place to learn Spanish away from the main tourist circuit, in a city with a young population and a large student community. Its central location makes it a practical base for trips to Toro Toro National Park, the Chapare rainforest or the Andes.

Studying in Cochabamba

Our directory lists three schools in Cochabamba: two universities and one Spanish language school.

  • Escuela Carmen Vega teaches Spanish to foreigners, mainly in one-to-one classes; it arranges group classes only for people who travel together at the same level. Lessons are 75% oral practice, 15% grammar and 10% written exercises, with a different teacher each day. Standard classes run from 8:30 to 12:30 or from 14:00 to 18:00, and intensive classes from 8:00 to 13:00. The school uses its own series of eight textbooks, which follow the Real Academia Española and are aligned with the Instituto Cervantes DELE levels.
  • Universidad Salesiana de Bolivia (USB) has a Cochabamba campus, the Ciudadela Universitaria Don Bosco in Colcapirhua, part of a network that also includes La Paz, San Carlos, Camiri, Yacuiba and Muyurina. In Cochabamba it offers degrees in systems engineering, software engineering, accounting, business engineering, law and education, as well as postgraduate programmes.
  • Universidad Privada Boliviana (UPB), a private university, also appears in our listings with a campus in Cochabamba.

University teaching is in Spanish, so degree programmes suit students who already speak the language well.

Getting around and daily life

The school's neighbourhood is close to the city centre, which can be reached by public transport, as can La Cancha, one of the largest markets in Latin America, and the Cristo de la Concordia statue. According to the school, the city is not part of Bolivia's typical tourist circuit, which helps students practise Spanish outside class.
