About Toledo

Toledo is the capital of the region of Castilla-La Mancha, on a hill above the River Tagus in central Spain. It is a small city: the municipal register (padrón) counted 88,356 inhabitants in 2025, according to the city council. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Toledo is known as the "City of the Three Cultures" for its Christian, Muslim and Jewish heritage.

For students, Toledo is above all a place to learn Spanish in a historic setting, close to Madrid but much quieter. It also has a campus of the regional public university and vocational schools for hospitality and employment training. Students who want big-city life usually prefer Madrid; those who want a compact, walkable city for language immersion often choose Toledo.

Studying in Toledo

Our directory lists four active schools in Toledo: a university listing, a Spanish language school, a hospitality school and a vocational training centre. The Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) teaches in Toledo; our listing covers its postgraduate law courses for students from Ibero-America, and the university also runs Spanish courses for foreigners in the city (ESTO), which are accredited by the Instituto Cervantes.

The Escuela de Hostelería Toledo trains cooks and restaurant managers. It offers vocational training (FP) cycles that lead to official qualifications, such as a grado medio in Cooking and Gastronomy and a grado superior in Kitchen Management, each of 2,000 hours, in the classroom or online. Its website lists fees of €5,600 for the grado medio and €5,900 for the grado superior programmes, and the school states that 75% of its students find a job within six months. Escuela Santa Clara has been accredited by the regional government since 1994 to teach vocational training for employment and is authorised for more than 50 professional certificates (certificados de profesionalidad). It is also a Cambridge English preparation centre.

Learning Spanish in Toledo

Toledo has two centres accredited by the Instituto Cervantes: Aula Toledo and the UCLM's Spanish courses (ESTO). Aula Toledo, in the old town, teaches general Spanish from level A0 to C1 of the CEFR. Its intensive course has 20 sessions of 50 minutes a week, with a maximum of eight students per class, and costs €299 a week, plus €25 for materials. Other options include:

  • online private lessons, in packs of 5 or 10
  • Spanish and literature, and Spanish and ceramics courses
  • courses for Erasmus+ KA1 mobility
  • preparation for the CCSE test and the DELE A2 exam required for Spanish nationality
  • host families within a 30-minute walk of the school

Aula Toledo runs courses for individual students mainly in June, July and October, and does not offer long courses, so it does not arrange student visas. Students who need a long-stay visa should look at university programmes instead.

Cost of living for students

Toledo is generally cheaper than Madrid, and many students who study in Toledo rent a room or stay with a host family. No official source publishes typical student rents for the city, so check prices directly with your school or with local listings.

Aula Toledo states that the city is only 30 minutes from Madrid. The nearest international airport is Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, which is linked to Atocha station by the C1 commuter train line.
