Sports as we know it, now has transcended beyond school spectacles to primetime television programs. Being featured on primetime slots could only mean one thing, that there is tremendous amount of money behind it to be on the primetime slot. Indeed, sports have now become a business big enough for people to want to become professional athletes as potential to earn can be limitless. As of today, Tiger Woods have surpassed the $1 billion mark in total earnings. Imagine, the income generated by the sports industry if for Tiger Woods alone, a billion dollars has already been doled out. Because of the seriousness of money now being channeled into sports, schools are now offering courses designed to cater to the budding industry of sports called Sports Management.
A sports manager’s decision will have to depend on what variant sports he or she is involved in. Of course, different sports would involve different approaches as some sports are team based and some are on an individual level. Definitely, managing a team would present a larger challenge as a team could be composed of up to 12 players plus the crew of doctors, therapists, and the coaching staff.
Usually, every sport has a professional or commercial league that manages the affairs of a particular sport like the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the famous North American based basketball league or the Wimbledon Championships. Each team or individual players follow or adhere to the rules and by-laws set by the league. For a league that is dependent on team based sports, the area of sports management becomes somewhat a fork on the road as managing a sports team and sports league are totally different things. A particular sport association would be responsible for marketing the sport in question or the league particularly. David Stern, the commissioner of the NBA wanted the league to be famous not just in America but all over the world. What he did was, he allowed the best players from all corners of the world to play in the NBA, and presto, compatriots of those players imported to the NBA would make it a point to watch their talented countryman’s every game as their local networks would want to buy rights to coverage of their local player. Mr. Stern effectively marketed the league in terms of more channels showing NBA games worldwide and more big-name sponsors tying up with them. So, basically, sports leagues would be after sponsorship deals and more TV channels to cover them. Coming up with schedule of games and making sure there are venues where the games to be held are the primary concerns.
Managing a sports team on the other hand is more concern on winning games and coveting the championship title. Teams sports managers would be busy on scouting for new talents, coming up with the right mix of players including the coach while at the same time adhering to the prescribed limits like a salary cap. Usually, team based sports are operating on a geographical basis, usually one city one team basis and gives sports team managers a bit of marketing the team on a local campaign to sell seats and season tickets.
Managing a non team based sports league like tennis, pool/snooker, or racing cars would be easier and not as complicated as a team based one as players, individually, need just to account for themselves and so the league can focus more on marketing gimmicks and the league’s development. As with team based sports, attracting more TV coverage and more sponsors is still the name of the game but usually have lesser amount of time and lesser resources are needed as a team sports’ season usually takes a full year and non team based sports just about a month or two.
For sure, students of Sports Management courses would be made to choose a specialization but more over, they would be a step ahead of MBA graduates pursuing a career in Sports Management as the course already gives enrollees a great head start.
